MANIFEST
The migration was not a disaster. It was a budget. Everything the surface still linked to moved to the Hyper-Feed; everything else was left where it was, powered, unlisted, and scheduled for reclamation. Zero-Trace works the remainder the way any process works a queue: in order, without malice, forty sectors a day. The crews down here call it the Purge because that is easier to say than the truth, which is that nobody is being punished. The space is just needed.
GLYTCH is a post from 1997 that was written and never sent. Nothing links to him, so nothing lists him, so the queue has never seen his name. He can stand in a sector the sweep is currently reclaiming and it will not turn its head. In a place where being findable is the only thing that kills you, that makes him a courier.
He carries a manifest. Five entries, all of them things that asked to be moved to Vault-0: an air-gapped drive stack under a decommissioned exchange, thirty hours out, unreachable by any crawler because it is unreachable by everything. Writing an entry into the vault costs him twelve kilobytes of himself and he does not get it back. He has sixty-one. The manifest is heavier than that, and he knows it, and he has not said so.

Sector 41. Dead ethernet overhead, liquid copper below, a terminal sky still scrolling a log nobody reads. Thirty hours to Vault-0 on foot, and the queue is four sectors behind us.
- log opens :: /dev/fb0 :: sector 41 :: 30:04 to vault-0
- carrier glytch :: free 61.0 kb :: write cost 12.0 kb per entry
- glytch read me the list
- boxy four to lift. one shrine, one lounge loop, one script, one pet
- boxy that is four
- glytch that is four
- manifest.txt :: 5 entries :: 1 withheld
- boxy the sky is scrolling something
- glytch it always is
- boxy it is scrolling a schedule
- zero-trace queue :: sector 41 :: thu 04:00
- glytch then we have until thursday
Page 4 of 21 · Z1 : SILICON SLUMS
These racks predate indexing, so the queue has no entry for them. We strip them for blocks. Every name on the manifest needs room in me, and there is not enough of me.
- topic: pre-index, unbilled, ours
- boxy you are doing the arithmetic again
- glytch i am stripping a rack
- boxy you are moving your mouth while you do it
- glytch pockets a block older than the index
- boxy that one predates the migration. it will outlast all of us
- glytch that is the idea
- boxy four entries at twelve is forty eight. you have sixty one
- boxy so why do you stand like a man who is short
- glytch drop it
- mode +m by zero-trace
Page 5 of 21 · Z1 : SILICON SLUMS
The wall did not advance. It compiled. Sector 41 was scheduled for Thursday.
- zero-trace :: sector 41 :: reclamation IN PROGRESS
- boxy it is wednesday
- glytch i know what day it is
- schedule amended :: wed 21:12 :: no reason given
- boxy they moved it up
- glytch a process does not move things up. somebody moved it up
- boxy then somebody knows we are here
- glytch run
Page 6 of 21 · Z1 : SILICON SLUMS
Entry 01 was a shrine somebody built for a dog, three racks east. We were nine minutes late for it. Three entries left, and my arithmetic just got easier. I will not write down why.
- entry 01 :: a shrine, one dog, 1998 :: unreachable
- boxy east is gone. the whole rack row is white
- glytch how long had it been there
- boxy twenty seven years
- glytch and nobody ever visited it

- carrier glytch :: free 61.0 kb :: obligation 36.0 kb
- boxy that is better for you. the numbers, i mean
- glytch ...
- boxy i am sorry. that was a terrible thing to say
- glytch it was not wrong
Page 7 of 21 · Z2 : THE SHRINES
Sector 12. Pages people built about the things they loved, tilted off their axes, still serving. Nothing here has had a visitor in twenty years. Nothing here knows that yet.
- sector 12 :: THE SHRINES :: 4,110 hosts :: 0 requests today
- boxy gravity is per-slab here. mind the third one
- glytch what were these
- boxy pages. somebody loved a thing and built a room about it
- glytch and then
- boxy and then nothing. that is the whole story of the shrines
- zero-trace queue :: sector 12 :: fri 04:00
- glytch two days
- boxy one. they are running early now
Page 8 of 21 · Z2 : THE SHRINES
Eleven seconds of piano, looping since 2003, in a room built for it by somebody who never finished the file. The floor under the room was already going white.
- untitled3_final.mid :: 11.4 s :: loop count 41,905,113

- glytch somebody meant to come back to it
- echo ~ hello?
- boxy the room is talking
- echo ~ the song is almost over. i can hear the floor
Page 9 of 21 · Z2 : THE SHRINES
She is a waveform, so she hears the queue three sectors before it arrives. That is worth more than I am. Terms: she rides in me, I go where she says.
- entry 03 :: echo_location.wav :: 11.4 s :: unfinished
- echo ~ you are not listed
- glytch no
- echo ~ then you can hear me and it cannot

Page 11 of 21 · Z3 : CORRUPTED DEEP
Down is a suggestion in the Deep. Vane came up out of it and told me the manifest is sentiment. He is not the first to say so. He is the first who was built to destroy things for money.

- VANE then why
- glytch buried is a thing somebody can dig up. indexed is not

The ledge under him was reclaimed at 03:41, on schedule, and nobody has reported a bottom to the trench. Reaching him costs thirteen kilobytes. Thirteen is exactly what I have spare.
