MANIFEST

The migration was not a disaster. It was a budget. Everything the surface still linked to moved to the Hyper-Feed; everything else was left where it was, powered, unlisted, and scheduled for reclamation. Zero-Trace works the remainder the way any process works a queue: in order, without malice, forty sectors a day. The crews down here call it the Purge because that is easier to say than the truth, which is that nobody is being punished. The space is just needed.

GLYTCH is a post from 1997 that was written and never sent. Nothing links to him, so nothing lists him, so the queue has never seen his name. He can stand in a sector the sweep is currently reclaiming and it will not turn its head. In a place where being findable is the only thing that kills you, that makes him a courier.

He carries a manifest. Five entries, all of them things that asked to be moved to Vault-0: an air-gapped drive stack under a decommissioned exchange, thirty hours out, unreachable by any crawler because it is unreachable by everything. Writing an entry into the vault costs him twelve kilobytes of himself and he does not get it back. He has sixty-one. The manifest is heavier than that, and he knows it, and he has not said so.

Sector 41. Dead ethernet overhead, liquid copper below, a terminal sky still scrolling a log nobody reads. Thirty hours to Vault-0 on foot, and the queue is four sectors behind us.

These racks predate indexing, so the queue has no entry for them. We strip them for blocks. Every name on the manifest needs room in me, and there is not enough of me.

  3. glytch i am stripping a rack
  4. boxy you are moving your mouth while you do it
